Cultivating reading excellence: Navigating assessment data and instructional strategies – Southeast Asia seminar series

This seminar series is jointly presented by Renaissance and GL Education.

This seminar will provide an introduction to the way how international schools are using assessment to support whole school evaluation and establish effective literacy development strategies. The seminars will explore how to transform assessment insights into actionable instructions, create a personalised learning path that unlocks the potential of every student.   

It will also cover:  

  • Assessment Expertise: Using impactful assessment of reading and comprehension to build a unique personal profile of each student.
  • Holistic Literacy Profiling: Exploring how a structured reading programme supports schools in establishing students’ reading and comprehension skills.
  • Case Study: Best practice from leading international schools across Southeast Asia in driving student motivation, enhancing engagement, and fostering a love of reading.

Venue and logistics

The three seminars are scheduled to be held in Bangkok, Phnom Penh and HCMC. There is no charge to attend the seminar, but due to capacity restrictions we will initially be restricting registrations to two delegates per school. Additional requests will be added to a waiting list in case of cancellations or unexpected spaces.

About the presenters

Mark Jones

Mark, an educator with over twenty years of experience and a former International School Headteacher, has a background in teaching Science and Physical Education up to IB and A Level. He possesses extensive educational expertise gained from diverse schools worldwide, including Malaysia, Seychelles, Kuwait, Switzerland, New Zealand, and the UK. Now based in Cornwall, UK, Mark recently achieved an MBA from the University of Essex, focusing on business principles applicable to educational contexts.

As an International Consultant at GL Education, he collaborates with major school groups globally, aiding senior leaders in data interpretation and delivering tailored training for effective use of assessment tools. Passionate about fostering collaboration and sharing best practices, Mark empowers schools to maximize staff and student potential in data-rich learning environments.

Chris Lapping

Chris is an accomplished educator, senior leader, and school governor with a first-class honours degree in Primary Education from Durham University. He has experience of working in leading schools spanning the UK, Malaysia, and the UAE, enriching his global perspective. Chris is passionate about leveraging edtech and assessment to improve educational outcomes for the whole child, whilst being particularly mindful of reducing teacher workload. As an International Consultant, Chris brings his firsthand expertise in using GL’s comprehensive range of assessments, both as a classroom teacher and in senior leadership roles, to support schools across Southeast Asia in harnessing their use of assessment to enable every child to unlock their full potential. 

Lingyu Zhang 

Lingyu is International Business Development Manager for Asia and has been working with Renaissance for more than three years, helping schools in the APAC region delivering standard-aligned digital solutions in assessment and differentiated reading practices. With her educational background and her learning experience, Lingyu brings a wealth of insight in EAL learning and cross-cultural competency for international schools in APAC. Prior to joining Renaissance, Lingyu worked in publishing and gained her master’s degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology in UCL.

Ann Pham

Ann, a former high school teacher in Vietnam, has devoted the last 12 years to Education, Technology, and EdTech in London. With a passion for leveraging the latest educational technology to empower students and alleviate the workload of educators, Ann is delighted to be part of Renaissance.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in education, with her grandfather, mother, and herself being former teachers, coupled with her second degree and extensive UK work experience, Ann possesses a profound understanding of the needs of schools, teachers, students, and parents. Her commitment to consulting and advocating for their interests is unwavering. 

Shawn Kang

Formerly a mathematics educator and ICT manager at the Florida Department of Education, Shawn's educational journey has been marked by academic excellence.

A graduate with a BBA in finance and marketing and a Master's of Art in economics from the University of Miami, Shawn's commitment to educational advancement is profound. Motivated by the transformative impact of education, he transitioned from a corporate role to a rewarding career in teaching. In 2020, Shawn assumed the role of Brand Ambassador at Nearpod in Asia, where his dedication to integrating innovative technology into classrooms has influenced over 600 schools.

Frances Kingston

Frances Kingston has worked at Renaissance since May 2018, working across a variety of projects. In her consultancy role, Frances works with several large trusts and is particularly involved in delivering a bespoke service and teacher training. Frances is passionate about empowering teachers to use both reading and maths data in order to shape their lesson delivery and embedding Renaissance solutions into their classroom practice.


Before she joined Renaissance, Frances was a teacher for over 27 years and taught in primary, middle and secondary schools across England. As a middle leader, she led on literacy, using Renaissance Products to raise reading standards and transform the reading culture at her school. Frances has vast experience of teaching those students who have special educational needs, particularly in reading, writing and maths. In April 2018, she won the Golden Apple Education Award for ‘Most Outstanding Primary Teacher’ in North and North-East Lincolnshire, – for being a teacher who brought learning to life and had gone the extra mile.

Karen Randolfe

Karen trained as a primary school teacher in Ireland and then taught for 10 years in Spain and France—most recently at an IB school in Lyon. She joined Renaissance in August 2021 and now works as a Senior Solutions Consultant on the international team. Karen is very passionate about inquiry-based, student-led learning.
