The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) provides you with a rounded profile of a student. It measures the main areas of reasoning ability known to make a difference to learning, and helps teachers understand how their students learn, what barriers to learning they may have and their academic potential.

CAT4 allows schools to understand students’ abilities, and it’s especially useful when triangulated with the Progress Test Series and New Group Reading Test. Ability scores from CAT4 will enable you to identify where attainment levels aren’t as expected, so you can help your students to reach their full potential.

Each and every person in the school community knows what is going on and how to use the CAT4 data to improve learning for every child.

Helps understand how pupils learn

CAT4 allows teachers to see what students are capable of – particularly when triangulated with other assessments (such as the Progress Test Series and NGRT) and teacher judgement.

Uncovers hidden potential

CAT4 can pinpoint the abilities of EAL students who may struggle verbally but score highly on spatial ability tasks, for example, or children who have high verbal skills but who struggle with numbers.

It’s multi-functional

CAT4 can be used across the school. It helps subject teachers advise on subject choices, SENCOs identify who needs additional support, and provides SLT with a reference point for every year group.

Provides a robust, stable measure

Standardised on 25,000 students, CAT4’s stability and consistency have made it especially valuable over the last few years.

Baseline upon school entry

Provides clear, benchmarked insights and is especially useful for obtaining a reliable baseline for your new students.

Provides reliable indicators

CAT4 provides a range of indicators for examinations, including GCSE and A level, International Baccalaureate and CBSE indicators.
