Testing to Support National Agenda Targets in Sharjah – 2019 / 2020

The regulator issued revised testing guidance in April 2020 to state that progress testing due to take place in May-June 2020 will now take place in the autumn term of the 2020-21 academic year.

The cohorts will be tested using the levels that would have been used this summer, so that progress can be analysed. These data will provide a useful benchmark to support teaching and learning along with CAT4 data and will be essential to inform schools’ teaching strategies for the 2020 – 21 academic year. The data will also be used as a starting point to measure future progress.

The sections below will be updated with further guidance and testing windows as soon as they are published.

Ability testing with CAT4

CAT4 is a mandatory assessment for private schools following an international curriculum.

Which students to test:

Guidelines state that the following cohorts should be tested:

  • Grades 3, 5, 7 and 9 or
  • Years 4, 6, 8 and 10

Schools that wish to test other grades, in addition to the target grades, are welcome to do so. This is educationally beneficial as it will provide schools with a more holistic picture of their students’ performance.

Students that have EAL may benefit from getting refreshed CAT4 data every second year as their verbal reasoning in English develops.

Refer to the table below to identify the appropriate test for each year.

CAT4 Level Grade Year
X 1 2
Pre-A 2 3
A 3 4
B 4 5
C 5 6
D 6 7
E 7 8
F 8 /9 9 / 10
G 10 / 11 11 / 12

Testing window:

The testing window is from 1 September 2019 to 30 November 2019.

About CAT4 Level X:

We are transferring CAT4 Level X from paper to our digital platform, Testwise.

CAT4 Level X will be available for schools that wish to use it during the 2019/20 testing window.

Benchmark testing with the PT Series

All schools are required to carry out attainment assessment with their students in mathematics, science and English.

To support schools to meet these requirements, our Progress Tests in maths, English and science are available for schools following UK and IB curriculums.

The data from this period of assessment will be essential in helping schools in determining the impact of the prolonged period of home study followed by the long summer vacation.

Which students to test:

SPEA Guidelines state that students in UK and IB curriculum schools, that were in the grades / years below during academic year 2019-20 should be tested with the test that they would have sat at the end of that academic year.

Grades 3, 5, 7 and 9 or

Years 4, 6, 8 and 10

Refer to the table below to identify the appropriate test for each grade / year.

Additional Testing:

To make Progress Tests part of a high-quality, inclusive and consistent whole-school system for assessing and monitoring student progress, the use of PT Series tests with all students in Years 4-10 would provide a consistent measure of attainment, whilst also facilitating monitoring of year-on-year progress through the standardised measures available in PT Series reporting.

Year (UK) Grade (IB, Others) Level: Progress Test Maths Progress Test English Progress Test Science
2 1 7 7 n/a
3 2 8 8 8
4 3 9 9 9
5 4 10 10 10
6 5 11 11 11
7 6 12 12 Not Required
8 7 13 13 13
9 8 14 14 14
10 9 15 15 15

Testing window:

The testing window has been moved to the first term of academic year 2020-21. We will update this section once SPEA confirm exact dates.

Data Sharing Agreement and Declaration of Use

All schools are required to sign and return a data sharing agreement, in order to receive their bespoke reporting and analysis to support evaluations.

If you have not yet done this, please contact us on international@gl-education.com

Updating student records

During registration, schools must clearly identify all Emirati students. Click here for further guidance on how to achieve this on the Testwise platform.
