Accelerated Reader (AR) helps your students build regular reading habits by matching them with books at the right level and checking understanding through short quizzes. You can set reading targets that show whether they are reading enough, at the right level and with good comprehension.
For younger students, targets appear as ‘badges’- each book unlocks a character as they work towards their daily reading goal. Older students see targets based on their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD); comprehension scores and a points goal linked to daily reading time.

Yes, Accelerated Reader is a great tool for supporting EAL students. It offers books with simpler vocabulary but age-appropriate content, including titles linked to CEFR levels and some dual-language options, helping you provide reading materials at the right language level.
You can use a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) to find the perfect starting point for each student and guide their book choices. You can also set modified targets and take advantage of AR’s built-in vocabulary support to help students learn new English words. Many schools in the UK and Ireland find that EAL students improve their English faster when they use AR regularly.
If you’re using Accelerated Reader (AR) alongside Star Reading – part of the broader Renaissance family of tools – you’ll benefit from seamless integration. Star Reading scores feed directly into AR, helping you to match students with books at the right level and to set personalised reading targets based on their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). This ensures each student is reading within a range that supports growth and builds confidence.
AR can also be used with the New Group Reading Test (NGRT). While the integration isn’t yet fully automated, it’s still possible to use NGRT results to determine ZPD ranges for students, with guidance available to support this process. We are actively working to improve connectivity between NGRT and AR.
