CoPS

A digital assessment for early identification of dyslexia and other learning needs.

A digital cognitive profiling tool for early identification of challenges with literacy skills and executive function for ages 4–7.

CoPS is a child-friendly assessment for ages 4-7 to identify cognitive strengths and challenges. Its nine short tests take 45-60 minutes in total to complete (and can be taken over a few sessions).

The tests take the format of games that cover: working memory, phonological awareness, phonological processing, auditory discrimination and colour discrimination.

Results are generated as graphical profiles which you can use with comprehensive ‘indications for actions’ tables and the teacher’s manual to identify teaching strategies and interventions to suit the needs of each child.

Can I re-test children with CoPS?

We don’t generally recommend this.

Re-testing is highly likely to produce results that have been influenced in some way, making them less likely to be valid or reliable. However, exceptional situations may arise when you feel the need to re-administer one or more of the sub-tests in CoPS – this would typically be after at least six months to avoid the practice effect.

How does CoPS fit with Rapid?

Rapid provides a quick, initial screening tool. Its results feed directly into the CoPS 4–7 and LASS 8 –11 tests for those children who require additional testing.

Can I use CoPS with EAL students?

Yes, due to its visual format and minimal spoken instructions, CoPS is suitable for use with EAL children.

To tackle the Races sub-test of auditory sequential memory, the child will need to know the spoken form of English animal names.

Where there is uncertainty, a teacher or assistant who speaks the student’s first language can help to explain instructions.

Who can administer CoPS and interpret its results?

CoPS can be administered with minimal training using the guidance in the manual. This means that teaching assistants can conduct the assessment.

However, interpreting CoPS results should be left to a qualified teacher, usually a SENCO. It is essential that you read the CoPS Teacher’s Manual before attempting to interpret results. Helpful case studies and teaching suggestions in the manual and on our website will further support you with interpretation.
