Dyscalculia Screener

Helps you identify students with dyscalculic tendencies and recommends intervention strategies.

An initial screener for teachers concerned about a student’s numeracy progress and skills application.

Screen small groups or individual students who show difficulty with numbers and arithmetic calculation using standardised assessment that ensures accurate benchmarks.

Gauge students’ abilities to understand number size, and simple addition and multiplication. Strengths and challenges are revealed, with Standard Age Scores provided.

Activities and strategies to support learners following the screener are available via the Dyscalculia Guidance Handbook (available to purchase separately). Activities, which include photocopiable materials, are based on real classroom experiences and grouped into specific areas of mathematics. This helps you structure teaching plans, building knowledge vital for students’ progress, covering each education stage, from pre-school through to university.

How can Dyscalculia Screener and Guidance help you?

Initial screener

This short test is a quick initial assessment to see how far a student’s abilities and skills match those of people who have been found to have dyscalculia. It comprises four or five subtests (age dependent) covering three areas: reaction time, capacity and achievement.

Comprehensive and accurate reporting

Results are easy to interpret and standardised for accuracy. The Group Report is a convenient way of assimilating and storing results for a student group, while a Parent/Carer Report along with further guidance and letter templates will help support communication with parents and carers both before and after screening.

Photocopiable resources

Photocopiable materials for use in the classroom and small group interventions.

FAQs

What skills are assessed?

  • Reaction time (Simple reaction time, capacity, dot enumeration, numerical stroop)
  • Achievement (Arithmetic achievement – addition, multiplication for students aged 10+ years).

When would I use Dyscalculia Screener?

Dyscalculia Screener can be used at any time to screen small groups or individual students.

Indications that a student may be experiencing barriers as a consequence of a specific difficulty with number include:

  • difficulty in basic number tasks, such as counting backwards or remembering ‘number facts’.
  • difficulty with processing or working memory, such as a slow performance with calculations or challenges with multi-step problems.

If a mathematics assessment such as the Progress Test in Maths has already been used, a poor mental maths score in comparison to the overall score may indicate a barrier to learning.

Does the Screener diagnose dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia can only be diagnosed by an Educational Psychologist or an appropriately qualified dyslexia assessor.

The Dyscalculia Screener offers an initial screener to see how far a student’s abilities and skills match those of people who have been found to have dyscalculia. Further assessments, which focus on specific skills, are recommended to determine whether intervention is necessary.

How can I support students whose reports indicate specific challenges?

This will be different from student to student, depending on their results. In some instances, you may wish to make adaptations to universal provision and in others you might need to complete further investigations.

The Dyscalculia Guidance Handbook (available to purchase separately) gives you practical advice on supporting students, from early years to higher education. It has specific teaching strategies and activities that have proven effective in helping students achieve their potential.
